Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the commercial activities of Mateo de Izaguirre, a Spanish slave trader owner of the slave settlement of Panama in the middle of the 18th century. It focuses on the strategies used to supply the continuous demands of African slaves to the important plantings and haciendas situated along the coast of Peru. Besides, it will study the way he used to confront serious obstacles related to this enterprise: scarcity and death of slave-pieces, investment shortage, and customer preferences.
