Abstract

Alfonso Toribio de Mogrovejo’s pastoral visitas stood among his main concerns during his tenure as Archbishop of Lima between 1581 and 1606. The visitas have been the object of much attention by scholars of the colonial period in general, and by defenders of the Archbishop in particular. This essay aims to prove the difficulties of studying the visitas on the basis of extant archival sources.
