Abstract
The monopoly of correspondence in America was granted in 1514 to Dr. Lorenzo Galíndez de Carvajal, a member of the Council of Castile, to whom the title of Major Mail of the Indies was conferred. The concession was in perpetuity for him and his descendants, being, throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the object of numerous leases, assignments and sales
