Abstract

Among the most famous victims of those who perished in the Real Felipe during the second siege of Callao, it is the marquis José Bernardo de Tagle y Portocarrero, who is a controversially central character in our process of independence. The present study tries to reflect the role that this character played in the independence of the city of Lambayeque on the basis of unpublished documents on the regional Archive of Trujillo. It also reflects different arguments issued around his figure and from Lambayeque pro-independence movements trying to reconstruct the thought of Torre Tagle and the reasons that motivated his political actions to end up with his death in the castles of Callao in 1825. Finally it takes a stance on the historiographical debate about the role played by Torre Tagle but left some final thoughts with the aim that the reader comes up with his own opinion.
