The participation of the mayoralas and mayordomos in the beginning and continuity of the Brotherhood of San Antón (1601-1671)
Abstract
Our research work is oriented to delimit the years of origin and end of the confraternity of San Antón and to establish its period of duration, the presence and function of the mayoralas and mayordomos, as well as to indicate the reasons that caused the disappearance of the confraternity, in comparison with other confraternity of similar origin, but that had greater continuity over time. Likewise, we assume that it was a confraternity of morenos and mulatos because that is how it is specified in the documents consulted and transcribed, since those terms were used to describe the mayoralas and the mayordomos, as well as being how they were recognized by the population. The term “morenos” was used with the intention of differentiating them from the black slave population.
